Today we're talking about the treatment of periodontal disease and how it affects our mouths. It's a really common condition that not many people know much about so if you're one of those people then just stay with me because today we're going to cover all the basics so that way when your dentist tells you about it next time, hopefully this will make more sense. Periodontal diseases and gum diseases are common dental ailments that can be prevented by taking care of your teeth. The first step to preventing these problems is regular brushing and flossing with a fluoride toothpaste, as well as professional cleanings every six months or so. With the right prevention, you will have healthier gums for years to come! The benefit of taking care of your teeth is that it helps prevent other health problems from happening in the future like heart disease or diabetes. So if you want to take good care of yourself, start by having a happy mouth! Prevention and treatment Gingivitis can be controlled and treated with good oral hygiene and regular professional cleaning. More severe forms of periodontal disease can also be treated successfully but may require more extensive treatment. Such treatment might include deep cleaning of the tooth root surfaces below the gums, medications prescribed to take by mouth or placed directly under the gums, and sometimes corrective surgery. To help prevent or control periodontal diseases, it is important to: Brush and floss every day to remove the bacteria that cause gum disease. See a dentist at least once a year for checkups, or more frequently if you have any of the warning signs or risk factors mentioned above.
